Finally we have left Holland and my heart is happy! It’s been a challenging year so far but with every cloud there is a silver lining.

We have set out to sea and I feel like a brand new person. Fuelled with new direction, a healthy savings account and my health and fitness levels are at an all time high – a fairly good result from 9 months of solitude.

In light of all this, I decided to cap it all off with a mini cleanse. I designed a 5 day programme, drinking 4-5 smoothies per day. Each one supercharged with a selection of fruit, vegetables, oats, nutmilks and superfood supplements. This was mostly a curiosity experiment, to give my body a boost of goodness whilst documenting my energy levels and overall feelings of health and wellbeing.

I’ve never been a big fan of juice detox’s or fasts, as I believe the body needs nutrients from a balanced diet to function well and perform to its best ability. But I’m curious when it comes to nutrition. I love creating new smoothie recipes, and I was pretty sure I could battle through 5 days – no chewing for a week? no biggie! I came up with a plan of blended meals that wasn’t to difficult to follow and provided me with a daily balance of proteins, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats.

The plan itself wasn’t hard to complete and because each smoothie was made using filling ingredients, I didn’t feel overly hungry. I had energy throughout the day, but I battled a bit at the gym. I didn’t have the same energy and drive that I normally do when working out or running. On a whole I felt amazing by day 5, but if I’m honest, I missed solid food! I was so ready to chow down on something warm solid and delicious!

Its definitely worth a try though. Each of us have different bodies that will react to this kind of cleanse differently. For me though i’ll be sticking to nutrient rich food. I love to eat, its that simple! In saying that though, I will most definitely incorporate some of these smoothies into my daily diet. It’s a great way to inject a boost of goodness into the system and the soul!

I have added 3 of my favourite smoothies that you might enjoy. The breakfast smoothie is a banger! I have now swapped out my morning porridge and replaced it with this guy…. its the absolute biz!

Protein boosted breakfast milkshake

1 frozen banana
1 cup nutmilk (see recipe here)
1/2 cup coconut milk or coconut water
2 tbs oats 1 scoop protein powder
1 tbs maca powder
1 tbs ginseng powder
2 drops vanilla essence
3/4 tsp cinammon

Accai berry & Banana bomb (pictured)

1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup nutmilk (see recipe here)
1/2 cup coconut water
1/4 cup natural yoghurt
1 scoop protein powder
1 tbs accai powder
1 tbs chia seeds
1 tbs coconut oil
Honey to sweeten

Spirulina Green

1/2 avocado
1/2 ripe pear
1/2 cup coconut water
1 cup of spinach greens
Juice of one lime
A small handfull of mint (for those of you who dont like mint, you can leave this part out) 😉
1 tbs matcha powder
1 tbs spirulina powder
1/4 cup hemp seeds
1 tbs coconut oil
Honey to sweeten

  1. I like healthy smoothies because I feel like they’re the only whole food I can always find time/materials/will power to make. Do you use a regular blender? I have a nutribullet. I assume something like that would work for these?

    1. I agree! Such a great way to inject a little goodness into your life! I have a vitamix but I’ve heard that the nutrabullet is also awesome! Must try it sometime….. Thanks so much for stopping by xxx
